Stalvo Residential Construction Systems: Faster, Energy-Efficient Homes with EPS & Aerated Panels

Stalvo houses, townhouses, and low-rise apartments are comfortable to live in and faster to build. Strong steel-reinforced EPS and AERATED panels are used for external walls, internal walls, flooring, and fencing applications.

On exterior walls, a Stalvo house using EPS and AERATED panels is significantly faster than traditional brick construction. One Stalvo panel is equivalent to seventy-five traditional bricks. As a result, a 150 square metre home can be cladded in just seven days.

Stalvo panels are also used for party walls (intertenancy walls) and structural flooring over joists, where easy fire and noise compliance further adds to construction efficiency and the comfort of residents.

  • Building a new home? Don’t know where to start?

Building a new home? Don’t know where to start?

German homeowners today have an endless number of home options to choose from, but the flipside is the sometimes-overwhelming task of knowing where to start!

Stalvo, Germany’s leading formulator of EPS and AERATED concrete, has been in the industry for over years and seen many prospective homeowners getting tripped up by either making assumptions or not thinking about the big picture.

But, never fear, help is at hand. Below we’ll share with you our top five tips for narrowing down which things you need to start thinking about first:

    1. Does the vision I have fit within my budget

It’s important not to get carried away and stick to your budget when it comes to your building material. Your dream may be to replicate luxurious natural stone façades, however it’s important that you consider: the cost of the material, how heavy the material will be, and how easy it is to install. These three things will ultimately have an impact upon your budget so it’s worth doing your research.

    2. Think about how to create comfortable spaces

This can be achieved by choosing a material that has superior acoustic and insulation properties to make your home “feel and sound” like a true sanctuary where it’s needed. You’ll also want to think about materials that will keep you warm during cold winters and cool during hot summers.

    3. Consider if you live in a forest fire-prone area

While forest fires are less common in Germany than in some other countries, certain regions like Brandenburg have higher risks due to dry pine forests and sandy soils. If you’re building in such an area, it’s important to comply with German building standards for fire resistance. There are many modern building options that provide excellent fire-resistant qualities, so it’s worth factoring this into your decision-making.

    4. Don’t forget about the essentials

It’s important to research the strength and durability of different materials available. If this is going to be your home for years to come, you’ll want to make sure you choose a material that can stand the test of time.

    5. How can I make my home eco-friendly?

It’s worth choosing a material that treads lightly on the planet. In the spirit of being more environmentally conscious, extra thought should be given to materials with low embodied energy, excellent insulation to reduce heating demands, and sustainable production processes aligned with Germany’s ambitious climate goals.

  • A STALVO home is for all seasons

A STALVO home is for all seasons

Germany is a country of climatic extremes – from the harsh winters in the Bavarian Alps, where temperatures regularly drop well below zero, to the hot summers in the Upper Rhine Valley, which can see temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.

We live in a challenging environment. Although most of us are not directly exposed to the most extreme conditions, severe weather events are becoming more frequent. Recent reports highlight the increasing number of heat records being broken across Europe, demonstrating that climate change is well underway.

If you’re building your forever home, you will want it to be perfectly suited to German conditions – both now and far into the future. That’s why your choice of building material is so crucial in creating a home that performs in all seasons.

This is where Stalvo comes in

Rising energy costs and the growing focus on sustainability have made people much more aware of the building materials they choose. This shift has led to the increasing popularity of products like Stalvo, which offer numerous advantages such as design flexibility and ease of installation, while also providing excellent energy efficiency.

A beautiful home to live in year-round

With energy prices having risen sharply in recent years, heating and cooling costs are a major concern for German homeowners. Alongside optimal site positioning, orientation and passive design principles, using Stalvo can significantly reduce your energy consumption.

External wall materials play a key role in regulating indoor temperatures. Tests have shown that a house built with Stalvo EPS and AERATED panels performs better than traditional brick construction in both heating and cooling efficiency. Stalvo’s superior insulation properties help maintain a comfortable indoor climate, meaning you’ll rely less on heating or air conditioning and lower your energy usage.

Whether facing scorching summers or freezing winters, Stalvo is a smart building product for German homes, helping you enjoy an efficient and comfortable living environment all year round, no matter where in Germany you live.

  • One material, endless applications

    One material, endless applications

Versatile, durable and easy to install, Stalvo’s many applications mean it can deliver a variety of building solutions for your next project.

Whether it’s a single dwelling, high-rise apartment block or new commercial facility, material selection is one of the most important decisions to make during a new build.

The materials you choose should deliver on aesthetics and durability; perform well acoustically; be fire resistant, and fast to install so that you can keep project costs and schedules under control.

In the past, builders and designers had three main options: brick, concrete and fibre cement. But when it comes to modern construction, Stalvo is quickly becoming the go-to solution for quality builds.

Read on to discover how Stalvo has a solution for every project – no matter how big or small.

    A versatile building product

Stalvo is a high-performance, masonry-type building product made from EPS and AERATED concrete. It is available in blocks and panels that are easy to handle, quick to build with, and better to live and work in.

As one of the most versatile building materials on the market, Stalvo has been used by architects, developers and builders around the country for a variety of projects – including residential, multi-residential, commercial and civil.

Its applications range from high-quality exterior walls and façades to intertenancy and corridor walls, floors and fences and it can be used to solve a variety of design and construction challenges.

    Fabulous façades

When it comes to designing a show-stopping façade, Stalvo EPS and AERATED panels and Stalvo EPS and AERATED panels XL are a great place to start. Designed for use in high- and low-rise projects respectively, both products provide a solid base for a wide range of colours and textured renders to achieve the look you want.

Additionally, our Stalvo PowerPattern collection can be used to add a decorative element to facades. Suitable for use on high- and low-rise buildings alike, the modular panels in this collection come with pre-routed patterns that instantly draw the eye. When combined with texture paint, render or spray-on coating systems, they can achieve a range of looks including metallic, sandstone and polished concrete finishes.

“Stalvo provides many options around colour and finish,” says Adrian Puzey, Stalvo’s Category Manager. “In the past, a designer or architect often had to align their project design with materials that were standard ranges. Now, our products can be produced to meet what designers have in mind.”

Residential facades can be further accessorised with Stalvo PowerProfile, a dynamically profiled cladding system that mimics the look of standing seam and other coated metal systems.

“When designing a residential façade, you might start with EPS and AERATED panels XL, before adding PowerPattern for depth and detail, or PowerProfile for a three-dimensional look,” says Adrian. “This is not something you can easily do with standard concrete or brick.”

A simple but dynamic cladding system, Stalvo PowerProfile is a great way to elevate a home’s façade.

    Solid and secure walls

Whether you’re building schools or offices, apartments or dual-occupancy homes, solid external and internal walls are essential. With steel reinforcement for added strength, plus an anti-corrosion layer for maximum durability, Stalvo’s wall systems are a reliable long-term investment.

EPS and AERATED panels XL is specified in residential builds for precisely this reason. Not only do the 75mm-thick panels look and feel solid, they also provide thermal insulation – helping to keep homes warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

“EPS and AERATED panels XL remains dense enough to provide good acoustics, and because it is aerated, it acts as a thermal insulator,” explains Adrian. “If you compare EPS and AERATED panels to solid concrete or brickwork, its insulation properties further contribute to home efficiency while still providing a solid and substantial feel like traditional masonry.”

For multi-residential projects, Stalvo Intertenancy Wall Systems deliver similar benefits. With their slim, lightweight design and good acoustic performance, Stalvo Intertenancy Wall Systems reduce noise transmission between residences, and enhance the liveability of dual-occupancy homes and high-rise apartments.

    Functional floors

A quality build starts from the floor up, and Stalvo has become a popular choice amongst architects and builders looking for strong and solid flooring systems.

The Stalvo PowerFloor system is ideal for residential and multi-residential builds. It can be used to install first floors, suspended ground floors, decks and balconies – and provides an excellent base for just about any floor covering. Better still, it offers good sound insulation and helps create peaceful indoor environments.

“Stalvo PowerFloor is fantastic for upper storeys because it minimises noise transference between levels and allows you to maintain a sense of peace and quiet in your home,” says Adrian. “It has a solid, concrete feel and eliminates the squeaking and bouncing you often get with thin particleboard flooring, too.”

For commercial construction, PowerFloor+ provides a fully engineered, load-bearing reinforced floor system. The panels fit snugly together to form a smooth and strong floor with excellent fire resistance and good thermal insulation.

  • BEST PRACTICE TIPS FOR BUILDING WITH STALVO

BEST PRACTICE TIPS FOR BUILDING WITH STALVO

Okios re:thinking homes  builds around 120 homes in germany and surrounds each year. Every residential project is unique – ranging from compact single-storey dwellings to sprawling multi-generational homes – however most of them share one quality: they’re Stalvo homes.

The company’s founder and managing director Mark is a big fan of Stalvo, specifying Stalvo products for floors and walls in the majority of his residential builds.

Mark loves the finish that he can achieve with Stalvo as well as the structural integrity it offers.

“Once you understand what you can do with Stalvo, and the aesthetics it gives a home, it’s a great product,” he says. “You can’t achieve the same result with brick and render.”

Mark loves the look and feel of Stalvo so much he even specified it for his own home..
Mark loves the look and feel of Stalvo so much he even specified it for his own home..

“We wanted something to capture our attention from every angle of the home,” he added. “Our façade has different angles and heights to create something striking, which has been made easier by using Stalvo as the main building material.”

With its sleek look and quality finish, a rendered Stalvo façade is hard to beat.

    The look of Stalvo

One of the key advantages of Stalvo is the finish it offers, especially as a base for render.

“The finish has a great texture,” he says. “It’s not super smooth, so when you are building custom houses – even Hamptons-style designs – it looks so much nicer.”

“We’re able to design some great homes – both standard homes and even custom homes – using Stalvo as a base material.”

When it comes to achieving a decorative profile on house façades, Mark favours Stalvo’s Designer Range, using STALVO EPS PANEL® to replicate the look of a traditional metal standing seam

Spice House is the perfect example of how Stalvo PowerProfile can be used to elevate a home’s exterior.

For the Spice House, a modern residential project with a dynamic mixed-material façade, he used STALVO EPS PANEL® on the second story to achieve contrast and highlight the cantilevered architecture.

“STALVO EPS PANEL® added striking interest to the front of the home painted in Monument which really appealed to a large group of buyers,” he says.

“As a builder, we love working with this product for its high-quality finish and straightforward installation. With Stalvo, the walls go up quicker than bricklaying. “It’s a little bit less messy as well; it’s a cleaner installation process.”

    Installing Stalvo

When it comes to unlocking the benefits of Stalvo on site, Mark says having experienced trades on board makes all the difference.

“We have a good contractor base,” he says. “We only use two companies to install our Stalvo. They’re trusted and they’ve been with us for a while. We want to make sure they’re doing the right thing by our customers.”

After so many applications for residential projects, he does have a couple of tips for installing Stalvo quickly and effectively.

“You definitely have to ensure you have your expansion joints where your windows are,” he says. “Make sure there is a visible gap prior to render and just make sure it’s installed correctly. If I’m talking to another builder, I also suggest they look at Stalvo’s installation guide and follow it closely.”

“Stalvo also has representatives who can come out and look at projects and check them over. Our construction team and construction manager all looked at it together so we could understand what you need to check for.”

    The versatility of Stalvo

He’s found that Stalvo also works well underfoot, providing soundproofing and thermal properties to keep houses quieter and more comfortable.

“Instead of having chipboard flooring, we like to upgrade to Stalvo PowerFloor.”

PowerFloor provides the feel of a solid concrete floor without the price tag. It is squeak-free with acoustic and thermal insulation and provides a great base for a wide range of floor coverings.

“It’s a beautiful product,” says Mark. “I have it in my house and all our display homes. When feet are running, it doesn’t sound like drums banging, either next door or underneath. It absorbs a lot of the sound.”

Stalvo’s versatility, aesthetic potential and ease of use make it a top choice for builders like Mark. Known for delivering modern, flexible homes with quality inclusions, Mark continues to specify Stalvo for his projects and showcase the enduring appeal of Stalvo building solutions.
